Fruits of Vulnerability - the newest body of work and first solo exhibition of Ia Kutateladze, (April 2025, Berlin) is an intimate exploration of a decade-long struggle with an eating disorder. The works confront themes of self-worth, body image, and the psychological complexities of living with this condition. Through this raw and unflinching body of work, Ia transforms personal vulnerability into a space for dialogue, challenging stigma and seeking healing through creative expression.
The exhibition features sculptures, objects, three-dimensional paintings, and weavings, all meticulously handcrafted by Ia at her Berlin studio. Clay, sand-cast and hand-woven aluminium, and cement serve as core materials, chosen for their contrasts between fragility and strength. Fruits, recurring both as literal and symbolic motifs, embody nourishment as well as toxic attachment, reflecting the artist’s conflicted relationship with them.
The body appears fragmented and surreal—tongues emerging from eyes, eyes embedded in mouths, limbs sprouting in uncanny ways. These distorted forms echo the turbulence of disordered perception and the inner violence of self-sabotage. The body becomes both vessel and battleground: a site of destruction, pain, and distortion, yet also a terrain of resilience and transformation.
